An Analysis of Strategic Behavior in eBay Auctions.∗

چکیده
This paper presents structural estimates of bidding behavior in eBay computer monitor auctions. We use our estimates to reject the use of Jump Bidding (Avery 1998) or “Snipe or War” bidding (Roth and Ockenfels, 2000). We also find that longer auctions only have a small effect on price and experienced auctioneers respond to this incentive. JEL Classification Numbers: C1, C7, D44, L1.

Strategic Pricing in Online Auctions
As many authors have noted, the past decade has experienced a dramatic rise in the number and dollar value of commercial transactions conducted through internet-based auctions. EBay, arguably the largest of the internet auction sites, claimed 95 million registered users in 2003 accounting for a total transaction volume of $24 billion – a 60% increase from the previous year (eBay 2005). While th...
متن کاملLate and multiple bidding in second price Internet auctions: Theory and evidence concerning different rules for ending an auction
In second price internet auctions with a fixed end time, such as those on eBay, many bidders ‘snipe’, i.e., they submit their bids in the closing minutes or seconds of an auction. Late bids of this sort are much less frequent in auctions that are automatically extended if a bid is submitted very late, as in auctions conducted on Amazon. We propose a model of second price internet auctions, in w...
متن کاملBidding Behavior and Price Formation with competing Auctions: Evidence from eBay
Existing literatures consider on-line auctions as many independently running auctions and each bidder chooses only one auction. However, many substitutable goods are auctioned at the same time and bidders can bid several auctions at the same time. We examine a data set of eBay Pentium III 800 MHz CPU auctions to explore the bidding behavior and price formation for competing auctions. We also us...
متن کاملBehavior in Second-Price Auctions by Highly Experienced eBay Buyers and Sellers
When second-price auctions have been conducted in the laboratory, most of the observed bids have been “overbids” (bids that exceed the bidder’s value) and there are very few underbids. Few if any of the subjects in those experiments had any prior experience bidding in auctions. We report on sealed-bid second-price auctions that we conducted on the Internet using subjects with substantial prior ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Auction Parameters on Price Dispersion and Bidder Entry on eBay: A Conditional Logit Analysis
This paper studies price dispersion and bidder entry in sequential online auctions of indistinguishable items, where goods and shipping costs are identical. Contrary to intuition and the “law of one price,” previous empirical analyses show large price swings among auctions of identical products. To study this phenomenon, this paper performs empirical analysis on a dataset of 3,164 sequential eB...
